The Head Caravaggio Gave His Own Face, and Two More Puzzles
Three works on this route are still being argued about, and that is the thread the guide follows. In Caravaggio's David with the Head of Goliath, the severed head is a self-portrait. He painted himself as the monster, holding his own face up by the hair, at a point in his life when he was wanted for murder and hoping for a pardon. Nobody has settled what he meant by it. Titian's Sacred and Profane Love has had that title for centuries and art historians still cannot agree which of the two women is which, or whether the distinction is the right one at all. Bernini's Apollo and Daphne catches the transformation at the exact moment it becomes irreversible: bark closing over one leg, fingers already leaves. Marble, cut so thin at the edges that it reads as foliage. Two hours, skip-the-line, a small group. The gallery is reservation-only and sits in the park, which is why it stays quiet. The tour ends inside, and you are free to stay on. The gardens are open afterwards, and the Pincio terrace above Piazza del Popolo is a fifteen-minute walk.

Galleria Borghese
Meet your guide at the museum entrance and go in on pre-booked skip-the-line tickets. Two hours in a small group, and the highlights of the Galleria Borghese. Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, where the marble at the edges is cut thin enough to read as leaves. Caravaggio's David with the Head of Goliath, in which the painter gave the severed head his own face. Titian's Sacred and Profane Love, still disputed by the people who study it for a living. The commentary is the stories behind them, not the labels.
Villa Borghese Gardens
After the tour, the Villa Borghese gardens are outside. They were the family's private grounds and are now the largest quiet space near the centre. The Pincio terrace at the far end looks over Piazza del Popolo and the roofline of the old city.
Piazzale Scipione Borghese, 5, Roma
The tour ends inside the museum. You are welcome to carry on looking around on your own, or to walk out through the gardens.
