Castel Sant'Angelo Skip-the-Line: The Full Museum Route
The standard museum route, entered without the queue, covering the whole building rather than a selection of it. That matters here because the castle is stacked rather than spread out, and the route climbs through five different centuries in one continuous line. The Roman spiral ramp comes first, then the fortified courtyards where cannonballs are still piled from when this was an armoury, then the papal apartments with their frescoed rooms, then the Renaissance halls and the loggias built to look out over the river. What you are walking through is roughly two thousand years of a single site being reused by whoever needed it: an emperor who wanted a tomb, popes who wanted a keep, a garrison, a prison service, and finally a museum. The route ends on the Angel's Terrace, with Rome, the Tiber and the dome of St Peter's laid out from the highest publicly accessible point on this bank. All sales are final: cancellations are not refunded.
