Trastevere's Two Underground Churches, in a Group of Ten
Trastevere is walked over more than it is walked into. Two of its churches have older churches underneath them, and this walk goes down into both. The group is capped at ten people. Underground rooms are small and the stairs are narrow, so the number matters more here than it would above ground. One detail to read before booking, because it decides what you actually see. The Cavallini room at Santa Cecilia, with his Last Judgement, is part of the morning option only; the afternoon departure does not include it. And if a section of either basilica is shut on the day, the guide points out other monuments instead and the walk runs its full length either way. What is constant is the descent under Santa Cecilia, where the mosaic floor of a 3rd-century Roman house is still in place and the earlier basilica has kept its shape. Above ground the route runs through the cobbled back streets, past the door of San Crisogono that gives no hint of the Bernini apse behind it, and ends at Santa Maria in Trastevere with its gold mosaics catching whatever light is in the square.

Rome
Meet the guide by the statue in Piazza Belli. Look for a yellow label reading TOURIKS. Please arrive at the meeting point 5 minutes before the start time.
Fiume Tevere
The walk starts by the Tiber. From there the route heads into the streets of Trastevere and the sights below them, the kind that are almost impossible to find without someone pointing at the door.
Basilique San Crisogono
San Crisogono is medieval and looks unremarkable from the street, which is the point: inside there is an apse by Bernini and a Cosmatesque floor laid in interlocking circles of coloured marble.
Santa Cecilia in Trastevere
At Santa Cecilia the descent leads onto the mosaic floor of the 3rd-century Roman house that belonged to the martyr, with the earlier basilica preserved around it. The story of Cecilia's life and her long, botched death is told here, and Roman mosaics surround her tomb. The Cavallini room and his Last Judgement are included with the morning option only.
Trastevere
Back at street level, the cobbled streets of Trastevere with the guide, at the hour when the district is doing whatever it does that day.
Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere
The walk ends in front of the gold mosaics of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of the oldest churches in Rome. The square outside is where the neighbourhood starts, with its wine shops and traditional trattorie, and where you are left to carry on alone.
Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, Roma
From here you are in the middle of the district, with its wine shops and traditional trattorie, which is what Trastevere is known for.
